History of adult toys

The use of adult toys is very common in the present day. We have a great variety of sex toys in the market today. But the use of adult toys is not recent, and has been prevalent since ancient times.

The use of adult toys has been traced to as early as 6th century B.C. A vase discovered in Greece, dating back to before the birth of Christ, depicts two women engaging in a sexual activity with a dildo. We also find artwork dating back to ancient times, showing a man having sex with a woman and using a dildo too. People from Greece claim to be the first ones to use the dildo. Trading merchants are said to have sold these crude stone, wood or leather hand-crafted objects to lonely or single women. The rubber dildo came much later, in 1850, in England.

In Indian history, the Kama Sutra also talks of sexual activities with the aid of adult toys, aromatic oils and perfumes.

Sex toys such as vibrators were introduced in the market in the late 1880s. The concept of the vibrator developed as early as the Victorian period. Female hysteria was treated by causing vibrations in on the female genitalia, and this was how the idea of the present day vibrator was born. The vibrator was long advertised as a remedy for treating hysteria in women, but later on, from 1921 onwards, vibrators were being advertised as means to keep a woman beautiful and healthy. During the 1920s, vibrators were being shown in pornographic films and these films stripped vibrators of their social camouflage as a remedy for hysteria and after that, they were no longer openly advertised.

Another adult toy, which has been in use since historic times, is the Ben Wa ball. These balls are inserted into the female genitalia or anus to incite sexual pleasure. These balls were first discovered at the end of the 16th century by Ralph Fitch, in Myanmar, and later in Thailand by Francesco Carletti. In Thailand, they were used to increase penis size.

Thus, adult toys have been in use since ancient times, and technological advancements of the modern world have given rise to a myriad of variations in their designs and uses.
